Why Is My Vape Blinking? What Different Light Signals Mean

A blinking light on your vape is a built-in safety alert. The device is detecting an error that prevents it from firing safely. The most common causes are a fully depleted battery, a connection issue with the pod/coil, or a short circuit.

How to Read the Blinks

While every manufacturer (like Vaporesso, Smok, or Voopoo) has their own specific light codes, the industry follows a fairly standard pattern. Here is what the flashes usually mean:

3 to 5 Flashes: Connection Issue or Short Circuit

If your device flashes 3–5 times when you press the button, it usually means the battery cannot detect the coil, or it has detected a short circuit. The device cuts power immediately to prevent a battery failure.

  • Fix: Remove the pod or tank. Wipe the metal contacts on both the bottom of the pod and inside the device with a dry tissue. If you are using a device with replaceable coils, ensure the coil is pushed firmly all the way in. If it still flashes, the coil itself is likely a dud and needs replacing.

10+ Flashes: Dead Battery

A long sequence of blinks (often 10 flashes) means the battery voltage has dropped below the safe operating limit. The device is completely flat.

  • Fix: Plug it in. If the device does not light up when plugged in, read our guide on Why Is My Vape Not Charging for further troubleshooting.

2 to 3 Flashes Mid-Puff: Time Cutoff

Almost all regulated vape kits have a "10-second cutoff" safety feature. If the fire button is held down continuously for 8–10 seconds, the device will flash and stop firing to prevent accidental firing in a pocket.

  • Fix: Just release the button and press it again. If this happens in your pocket, remember to click the button 5 times to turn the device off before storing it.

Does the Colour Mean Anything?

Yes. Many pod kits (like the Uwell Caliburn series) use coloured LEDs to indicate battery level during normal use:

  • Green: 60% – 100%
  • Blue: 30% – 60%
  • Red: Below 30% (Recharge soon)

If your device is blinking red rapidly, it is almost certainly a low battery warning. If it is blinking green and refusing to fire, it is usually a coil connection issue.

When to Replace the Device

If your device is fully charged, the contacts are clean, you have inserted a brand new coil, and it still blinks 3 times when you try to fire it, the internal circuitry has likely failed. E-liquid often leaks into the battery housing over time and damages the motherboard. If your kit is over 12 months old and showing these terminal signs, it is time to look at a replacement vape kit.
