Why Is My Vape Not Charging? Safe Troubleshooting Guide

A vape that will not charge is almost always caused by one of four things: a faulty or incompatible cable, debris in the charging port, a software/protection lock that needs a reset, or a degraded battery that can no longer accept a charge. Work through these in order before assuming the device is dead.

Step 1 — Check the Cable and Adapter First

This is the cause of the majority of "not charging" reports, and it is the easiest to rule out. Swap in a different USB cable — ideally a known-good cable you use for something else. Cheap or worn cables lose their internal connections while appearing fine externally. Also try a different USB adapter or wall socket. USB output varies significantly between adapters; a very low-output adapter (under 5V/1A) may not deliver enough power to trigger charging on some devices.

Step 2 — Inspect and Clean the Charging Port

Vape devices live in pockets and bags. Lint, dust and debris accumulate in USB-C and micro-USB ports and can physically block the cable pins from making contact. Use a dry wooden toothpick or a soft-bristle paintbrush (never anything metal) to gently clear visible debris from the port. Do not use compressed air as it can push debris further in. After cleaning, attempt charging again before proceeding.

Step 3 — Try a Short Reset

Many regulated vape devices have a built-in protection circuit that locks out charging if the device detects an over-discharge event (battery drained completely flat) or a short circuit. Common reset methods:

  • Click the fire button 5 times rapidly to toggle the device off, then on again
  • Connect to the charger with the device powered off
  • Leave connected for 15–30 minutes on a low-wattage USB port — a fully flat battery sometimes needs a slow trickle before the protection circuit releases

Step 4 — Check for Liquid in the Port

E-liquid or condensation inside the charging port is a common issue with pod kits, which tend to leak from the base. If you suspect liquid contamination, do not attempt to charge the device. Leave it open to air for at least 24 hours in a warm, dry environment, then try again. Charging through liquid risks a short circuit and potential battery damage.

When Is a Battery Past Recovery?

Lithium-ion batteries have a finite lifespan — typically 300–500 full charge cycles. After this point they degrade: holding less charge, charging more slowly, and eventually failing to charge at all. Signs of a dying battery include the device dying well before a full charge is depleted, the device getting unusually warm during charging, or the battery swelling (this is visible as a bulge in the device body or a pod that no longer sits flat).

Battery Safety: When to Stop Using a Device

A swollen (bloated) battery is a serious safety concern. Do not continue using or charging a device with a visibly swollen battery. Swollen lithium-ion batteries carry a risk of thermal runaway — they can rupture or catch fire. The correct action is:

  1. Stop using the device immediately
  2. Keep it away from flammable materials
  3. Do not attempt to puncture, disassemble or put in household rubbish
  4. Take it to a designated battery disposal point — most large supermarkets, council recycling centres and many vape shops accept lithium batteries

Should I Replace or Repair?

Most vape devices at the entry-to-mid price range (£20–£60) are not economically repairable by consumers. If the cable, port, and reset steps have all failed and the device is over 12 months old, replacement is usually the most practical choice. Browse our range of vape kits for current devices.
