Why Is My Vape Battery Draining So Fast?
A vape battery drains rapidly for one of three reasons: the wattage is set too high for the battery capacity, you are vaping more frequently than before, or the lithium-ion battery has naturally degraded due to age and charge cycles.
1. Age and Battery Degradation
Every vape device uses lithium-ion batteries. These batteries have a finite lifespan, usually rated for 300 to 500 full charge cycles. Every time you plug your device in, it chips away at the battery's maximum capacity. If you have been using the same pod kit every day for a year, its maximum battery capacity might only be 60% of what it was when it was new.
The Fix: Battery degradation is irreversible. Do not attempt to open a sealed pod kit to replace the battery — this is highly dangerous and poses a severe fire risk. If an integrated battery device is no longer lasting half the day, you need to dispose of it safely (see our Safe Disposal Guide) and buy a new one.
2. Wattage and Coil Resistance
Battery life is heavily dictated by how much power you ask the device to output. If you recently switched from a 1.2Ω coil to a 0.6Ω coil, your device has to output significantly more power to heat that lower-resistance coil.
For example, running a device at 15W will drain the battery more than twice as fast as running it at 7W. If your battery is dying quickly, check your wattage settings. Read our Vape Wattage Guide to understand how to optimise your settings for your specific coil.
3. Extreme Temperatures
Lithium-ion batteries hate extreme temperatures. Leaving your vape in a freezing cold car overnight, or in direct sunlight on a hot day, causes massive temporary (and sometimes permanent) drops in battery efficiency. Cold temperatures slow down the chemical reactions inside the battery, making it appear dead even when it isn't.
The Fix: Keep your vape at room temperature. If it gets very cold, let it warm up naturally indoors before using or charging it.
4. Chain Vaping
If you are taking frequent, consecutive puffs without letting the device rest, the battery is under continuous load. This generates excess internal heat, which causes the battery voltage to sag artificially fast. It also risks burning your cotton (see Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt).
The Fix: Space your puffs out by 15–20 seconds to allow the battery to recover its voltage and the coil to re-saturate.
Should You Switch to Removable Batteries?
If you are frustrated by having to throw away an entire device just because the battery degraded, consider a device that uses external removable batteries (like an 18650 mod). When an 18650 battery degrades, you simply recycle the £5 battery and keep the £40 device. Check our Vape Mods collection for devices with removable battery support.
