Mesh Coils vs Regular Coils: What's the Difference?

Alex Morgan Alex Morgan Sep 21, 2026 6 min read

The key difference between a mesh coil and a regular coil is construction: a mesh coil uses a flat perforated metal sheet as its heating element, whereas a regular coil uses a wire wound into a spiral. This change in geometry has a significant knock-on effect on flavour intensity, heat distribution, lifespan and the type of vaping experience you get.

How a Regular (Wire) Coil Works

A standard coil is a length of resistive wire (usually Kanthal, stainless steel or nichrome) wound into a coil shape, surrounded by a ring of cotton wick. When you fire the device, electricity passes through the wire, which heats up rapidly. The heat transfers outward into the cotton, vaporising the e-liquid held within it.

The limitation is surface area. A wound wire has relatively limited contact points with the surrounding cotton, so heat distribution can be uneven — particularly at higher wattages.

How a Mesh Coil Works

A mesh coil replaces the wound wire with a thin flat sheet of metal with hundreds of small holes punched through it. This mesh is then wrapped in cotton. Because the flat sheet has far greater surface area than a wound wire of the same resistance, it:

  • Heats more evenly across the full wick surface
  • Vaporises liquid more efficiently per watt
  • Ramps up to temperature faster
  • Produces a more consistent, dense vapour per puff

Flavour Comparison

Mesh coils are widely regarded as producing superior flavour, particularly in sub-ohm tanks. The even heat distribution means the entire cotton surface vaporises simultaneously rather than progressively, producing a cleaner, more saturated flavour hit. If you are using a complex multi-note e-liquid — a dessert blend or a layered fruit shortfill — a mesh coil will reveal more of those nuances.

For simple single-note flavours or high-nicotine MTL vaping, the difference is less pronounced. Many MTL vapers prefer the slightly drier, more restrained vapour production of a wire coil.

Vapour Production

Mesh coils produce noticeably more vapour. If cloud production is important to you, mesh wins clearly. If you prefer a discreet, cigarette-like vapour output in an MTL style, standard wire coils are typically more appropriate.

Coil Lifespan

Mesh coils often last slightly longer than equivalent wire coils when used with compatible e-liquids, because their even heat distribution prevents localised hot spots that accelerate cotton burning. However, lifespan is still governed primarily by:

  • E-liquid sweetener content (sweeteners caramelise on coils)
  • Wattage (running above the rated max shortens lifespan dramatically)
  • Frequency of use

Compatibility

Mesh coils are not universally interchangeable with standard coils, even within the same device range. Coils are manufactured to specific thread and socket dimensions. Always confirm the coil type that your specific tank or pod supports before purchasing. Browse our replacement coils range to find coils by brand and device compatibility.

Which Should You Choose?

Factor Regular Wire Coil Mesh Coil
Flavour intensity Good Excellent
Vapour production Moderate High
Best for MTL / high nic / discreet Sub-ohm / cloud / flavour
E-liquid compatibility 50/50 or High VG (device dependent) High VG shortfills recommended
Typical lifespan 1–2 weeks 1–3 weeks
