How to Prime a Vape Coil Correctly (And Why It Matters)
Priming a vape coil means saturating the cotton wick with e-liquid before you fire the device for the first time. Skip this step and you will almost certainly burn the coil dry, producing a harsh, charred taste that can ruin the coil entirely within seconds — and no amount of extra liquid will fix it afterwards.

Step-by-step guide to properly priming a new vape coil before first use.
Why Priming Matters
A factory-fresh coil contains dry, unsoaked cotton. When you fire the device, the heating element reaches temperatures of 200–400 °C almost instantly. If there is no liquid in the cotton to vaporise, the cotton itself scorches. That damage is permanent. A well-primed coil takes about 5–10 minutes of patience; a burnt coil costs you money and flavour.
Step-by-Step: How to Prime a Vape Coil
Step 1 — Apply liquid directly to the coil ports
Look at your new coil. You will see small intake holes cut into the side of the coil body (usually 2–4 holes). Using the tip of your e-liquid bottle, apply 2–4 drops of e-liquid directly into each hole. You are soaking the cotton from the outside in. Do not flood it — just enough to visibly darken the cotton.
Step 2 — Fill your tank or pod and wait
Install the coil, fill your tank or pod with your chosen e-liquid, then put it down and leave it. The cotton will continue drawing liquid inward through capillary action. The minimum wait times are:
- Standard coils (1.0 Ω+): 5 minutes
- Sub-ohm coils (below 1.0 Ω): 10–15 minutes
- Mesh coils: 10–15 minutes (larger cotton surface area takes longer)
If you are using a thick High VG (70/30+) e-liquid, allow the longer end of those times. Thicker liquid moves through cotton more slowly.
Step 3 — Take gentle primer puffs before firing
Before you switch on the device, place your lips over the mouthpiece and take 3–5 slow, gentle draws without pressing the fire button. This pulls liquid into the coil from below. You should hear a slight gurgling — that is the sound of liquid moving into the cotton. This is normal at this stage.
Step 4 — Start at low wattage and work up
Fire your first few puffs at the lowest end of the coil's rated wattage range (printed on the coil itself). Gradually increase over 5–10 puffs until you reach your preferred wattage. This technique, sometimes called a "break-in period," extends coil lifespan significantly.
Common Mistakes That Burn Coils
- Firing immediately after installation — even a single dry hit can char the cotton.
- Running the tank too low — once liquid drops below the coil intake ports, the cotton starts to dry out mid-use. Keep your tank at least 20% full.
- Using the wrong e-liquid ratio — High VG liquid in a small MTL coil can starve the cotton of liquid because it cannot wick fast enough at high draw frequency.
- Vaping too rapidly — chain vaping (continuous puffs within seconds of each other) does not give the cotton time to re-saturate between draws.
How Do You Know a Coil Is Properly Primed?
Your first puff should taste clean, exactly like your e-liquid flavour — no harshness, no dry scratchy sensation at the back of the throat, and no chemical or charred aftertaste. If any of those are present on the very first puff, stop immediately. The coil may already be damaged.
How Long Should a Properly Primed Coil Last?
A coil that is correctly primed and used with a compatible e-liquid should last 1–2 weeks for an average vaper. Refer to our guide on How Long Do Vape Coils Last for a full breakdown of lifespan, warning signs and replacement timing.
Which Coils Are Compatible with My Device?
Coil compatibility is device-specific. Using the wrong coil will either not fit physically or will perform poorly. Always check your device manual or the manufacturer's website before ordering. Browse our full range of replacement coils — filtered by brand and resistance.
