50/50 vs High VG E-Liquid: Which Should You Use?
The choice between 50/50 and High VG e-liquid is determined almost entirely by your device — not personal preference. Using the wrong ratio for your hardware is one of the most common causes of burnt coils, flooding and poor flavour. This guide focuses on the practical compatibility question our VG vs PG basics article does not cover in depth.
The One-Sentence Rule
Usage Overview: As tracked in our UK vaping statistics guide, 50/50 e-liquids remain the most widely consumed e-liquid formulation among the UK's 5.8% daily adult vapers.
Use 50/50 in any pod kit, pen or low-wattage MTL device. Use High VG in any sub-ohm tank or high-powered mod kit. Everything else is detail below.

50/50 e-liquid is thinner and best for pod kits, while High VG is thicker and designed for sub-ohm mods.
Why Your Device Dictates the Ratio
VG (vegetable glycerine) is thick and viscous. PG (propylene glycol) is thin and runny. The coil in your device has wicking ports — small holes or channels through which liquid flows into the cotton. These ports are engineered for a specific liquid viscosity:
- Small wicking ports (pod kits, MTL pens): designed for thin 50/50 liquid. High VG is too thick to flow through these ports fast enough. The result is a dry, muted hit or a burnt coil.
- Large wicking ports (sub-ohm tanks, mesh coils): designed for thick High VG. A thin 50/50 liquid flows through too fast, overwhelming the coil and causing flooding, gurgling and spitback.
50/50 E-Liquid: When and Why
50VG/50PG liquid is the standard format for 10ml bottled e-liquids — both freebase and nicotine salt. It is thin enough to flow smoothly through restrictive pod coils, and the PG content contributes to a noticeable throat hit. Higher PG content also carries flavour compounds more efficiently than VG, meaning a 50/50 liquid often tastes sharper and more defined in an MTL pod than a High VG equivalent.
Best for: All pod kits, MTL starter kits, nic salt liquids, 10ml freebase liquids.
High VG E-Liquid: When and Why
High VG liquid (typically 70VG/30PG or 80VG/20PG) is almost always sold as a shortfill — a larger-format, 0mg liquid to which you add your own nicotine shot. The thick VG base produces dense, smooth vapour with a noticeably softer throat hit than PG. At high wattages (40W+) through a mesh coil, a High VG liquid will produce significantly more vapour and carry complex flavour notes very well.
Best for: Sub-ohm tanks, mesh coil devices, high-powered mods, vapers who prefer cloud production over throat hit.
What Happens If You Use the Wrong Ratio?
| Scenario | Symptom |
|---|---|
| High VG in a pod kit | Dry hits, burnt taste, rapid coil failure |
| 50/50 in a sub-ohm tank | Flooding, gurgling, harsh throat hit, spitback |

Nicotine Salt vs Shortfill — Which Ratio?
Nicotine salt e-liquids are always 50/50 — they are designed exclusively for MTL pod kits. Shortfills are always High VG — they are designed for sub-ohm devices. This is not a coincidence: the product type and the ratio are matched by design. See our guide What Is Shortfill E-Liquid for a full breakdown of the shortfill format.
Quick Reference
| Your Device | Recommended Ratio | Product Type |
|---|---|---|
| Pod kit / MTL pen / starter kit | 50VG / 50PG | 10ml nic salt or freebase |
| Sub-ohm tank / high-powered mod | 70VG/30PG or higher | Shortfill + nic shots |
